In still developing news, Google has apparently removed the first Android version of the massively popular What’s The Word from Google Play, their mobile app market. (Just before being removed, the app status showed between 5 and 10 million downloads.) What’s The Word? 4 Pics 1 Word was pulled from Google Play yesterday and is no longer available for download. The link to the app on the Play store is still in Google search results, but when clicked, results in a broken page (404 error).
Our speculation is that the developer LOTUM GmbH did not fully license the photos they had used in the app and the game was removed due to licensing issues regarding the images. This is pure speculation on our part though. There is no official word from either Google or LOTUM GmbH on the reasoning or a timeframe for when it might be reinstated.
In the meantime, you can still download 4 Pics 1 Word from iTunes for all iOS devices. Our advice is, if you want it, you better grab it now though. Apple has traditionally been much more stringent about copyright issues than Google and if our guess above is correct and the issue is indeed copyright violations, the iPhone and iPad version will surely be pulled from the iTunes store soon.
As soon as we have more information, we will post and pass it along. In the meantime, if you still have the game and need help, be sure to check out our 4 Pics 1 Word Answers page for solutions to all puzzles on both the iOS and Android platforms. Is this the reason why I suddenly got a “You’ve guessed all the answers” message when I was at level 2256? Seems like an odd number to finish on.
